Day 23 – Therapy is Fun! – April 28

Did you every think that you’d hear someone say that? Well, I think mom is really enjoying her therapy. It’s a chance for her to get out of that bed and move around. They really do push their patients here and this is where mom really shines. There are times when she actually asks for MORE!

Today is an interesting day. She started with the electronic stimulation devices. The first one was during her OT session. The therapist attached it to her forearm and it’s worn like a splint. Mom holds a sponge and the impulse makes her fingers open and close. It wasn’t on a very high level today since it was her first time. She seemed to tolerate it well so the therapist may up the voltage tomorrow.

After OT, we took a detour through the courtyard. She had me walking laps while she tried to work on her own left arm doing some of the exercises that the therapist showed her the other day. We went back to her room so she could rest for a bit before her speech therapist arrived. I had to leave but her friend, R, was there. R is going to be spending a lot of time with her this weekend since the family is taking a quick trip out of town (birthday present for the kiddo). Before I left, I told mom I’d be back on Tuesday. She asked me what day it was, I told her “Friday”, and she nodded her head. Almost as if she’s telling me it was OK to go. At least I hope so. Either way, she started to doze off so I took that as my queue to exit.

R checked in with me several times, including while the speech therapist was there. Mom also got the electronic stim on her throat to help jumpstart those swallowing muscles. Apparently mom is all about getting this working (of course she is! The lady wants to eat!!) and indicated that she wanted to make the vibrations stronger. She counted 1-10, said the days of the week, and the months of the year. All clearly and LOUD. I’d say she’s making great progress.

It’s tough leaving her since this is the 23rd day in a row I’ve been with her. But everyone telling me that it’s necessary. She’s in great hands. I really can’t wait to get back and see what she learned while we were away!

Updates will be less frequent and a bit sporadic this weekend. Don’t worry – we’ll make sure to note any important milestones. 🙂

  1. Dear Sue,
I am so pleased and excited to hear of your progress. Hurray for you. I am also very happy that you said you would like me to visit. I will try to go this weekend. I will call first to be certain you are up for me to come. I wrote A SHORT story in February. It is pretty funny so I will bring it with me. I will read it to you if you would like to laugh with me.
I hope it does not hurt for you to laugh.
    See you soon. Love, Debbie
