Day 30 – Unexpected Great News – Friday, May 5

Mom seemed to be feeling a bit better today. She said that she slept better, which I think helps a ton. Her attitude is a lot better. Not that she’s overly optimistic, but she’s still trying. As a matter of fact, in PT today, she did most of the work transitioning herself from the wheelchair to the platform. She followed that up by sitting unassisted for SIX MINUTES!

She really is giving it her all in everything she is being asked to do. It is taking a toll on her both physically and mentally. She was very tired but was able to enjoy visits with R, one of her pastors, and H – who brought along a special guest… her dog, Nicky! Mom seemed to enjoy seeing him.

Chad and I had talked about mom’s discharge date. We settled on Maple Grove at Ashby Ponds. Because of how quickly things can change, our biggest concern was missing out on a bed for her. We know that there is one available for her original discharge date (May 8). We also know that she is benefitting so much from this therapy and the few extra days will do wonders. But do we take a chance on losing her bed? Chad and I decided that since we expect her to be at the next facility for quite some time, we want her to be as comfortable as possible. We made the decision to stick with her original date to secure that spot for her. Our case manager (A) called Ashby Ponds to notify them and something wonderful happened… The case manager there said that they would hold the bed for her until the 12th! They NEVER do that. “A” must have made a strong case for the gains mom has been making and what our concerns were. So this really is a best case scenario. Mom may not feel like it because therapy has been tough but I talked with her for quite some time today and she’s willing to continue trying. She’s such a trouper.

I’m hoping that tomorrow is a good catch up day of rest for her. She only has PT scheduled and not until 3:00. She does have some people planning on coming by to see her, but if she dozes off or says she’s tired hopefully people will give her a break and let her rest. Her new digs will be a lot more conducive to visits and hopefully she’ll be feeling up to a lot more socialization. We’ll update the FAQ with specifics on the new place later once she’s settled.

  1. Hello Sue,
I am thrilled that you have a great new place to continue your recovery. I will find out how to get there and plan a visit with you. This time I WILL read you the funny story I wrote back in February. It is part of a memoir I am writing about all the crazy experiences I have had in my travels.
I have had workmen in and out of my house this week working on my deck refurbishing. I should be all done by Wednesday or Thursday.
I have missed water aerobics all week because I fell in my bedroom and cut my arm badly. I hope it will be healed enough to return to classes by Tuesday. I know everyone is anxious to hear about your progress. We are ALL praying and cheering for you. I will give you a report after class.
I need you. You are such an inspiration to me. I have always considered that knowing you is a blessing to me and, of course, to my sweet Mom.
    With all my love, Debbie
