Day 11 – Easter Day – Sunday, April 16

~7:30AM – Kim and Cyndie spent the night, and it was wonderfully uneventful. Sue slept most of the night (one of the first), and had minimal interruptions from the staff (thanks to the new floor that requires checks only every four hours).

~9:30AM – The charge nurse for the floor is Korean, and she is not taking any of Sue’s crap. 🙂 Needless to say, Sue is getting everything done in an efficient manner this morning with no resistance tolerated. It is going to be a good day.

~10:00AM – The charge nurse, speaking to Sue in Korean, has determined that Sue does not want anyone in the room today. At all. Specifically indicating Kim and Cyndie. This is a tough period. She needs her space, and we are willing to give that to her, but we also know that she is not as fully independent as she wants to be (or has been in the past). We both need to find middle ground on how much we are there to support her and how much she will tolerate us to be around. But as for today, Kim and Cyndie are headed home until further notice.

~1:30PM – Another call in to the hospital to check on Sue. They are either short-staffed or extremely busy (I am not sure which would be better to hear), but they have not been picking up since Kim and Cyndie left. Hopefully we can get a status soon or we will be heading back in – regardless of Sue’s wishes…

~3:00PM – With no answer from anyone all day, we all headed in to see Sue. We got there in time to visit with Pastor K, and he shared with us a number of good ideas on how to handle the process that we are undertaking – including her house, insurance, hospital bills, etc. Sue tried to talk to Pastor K as well, and even wrote her name in Korean for him (which is a big step).

~4:00PM – Sue is easily upset and cries a lot, which is disheartening. However, she is responding more positively and pushing back on us and the nurses a little less, so we will take it as a good sign.

~6:00PM – Kim and Cyndie’s dad came to the hospital to visit with them (not Sue, she was not up for visitors), but it was nice for that side of the family to get some time together as well.

~7:00PM – Kim, Chad, and Samantha headed home for the night while Cyndie and Wade stayed overnight with Sue. They worked on her mobility and exercises, and she seems more eager to have that done than in the past few days. We are looking for signs anywhere we can see them, so the slightest twitch from her left side or positive response from her in general is met with excitement and anticipation.

~9:00PM – The evening has settled down a bit. Sue is nodding off, but will get some medicine to make sure she sleeps well at about 10PM. Around 11PM, they will put on the CPAP to help with her breathing as she sleeps. And then we wait to see what tomorrow brings…
