Day 28 – Progress is Good, But is it Enough? – Wednesday, May 3

Mom has been doing so great with her therapies. She has come so far in the week that she has been there. Her speech has really improved just over the last few days. I am so proud of her! In speech she got to have pudding today! She’s still only cleared for ice chips when someone is there with her (we feed it to her to make sure she doesn’t get anything too big to deal with) but her therapist has brought in pudding today and some iced tea that was of a honey-like consistency. This proves that her swallowing is getting a lot better and she is also able to speak in short, but full sentences. Her speech does suffer though when she gets tired, but I think we all suffer from that.

OT came in this morning to help her with her shower and getting dressed. This is so essential to making sure that she learns how to take care of herself with her new challenges. I was able to make it to the center just in time to see her in PT. She was AWESOME. Her balance is getting so much better! I took this video of her working on sitting up. Look – No hands!

She also worked out her leg WITH an ankle weight:

Which is helping her to be strong enough to do this:

I’m so proud of how well she is doing. She is working really hard. The therapists say that she is doing great and is showing so much progress. Here’s today’s issue though. Although we are seeing a ton of improvement, the center has made the determination that she’ll plateau within the next few days. Don’t ask me how they know that already. What does this mean? It means that they have a discharge date of May 8. Trust me – I was NOT happy to hear that. I’ll keep the rest of my thoughts on this to myself…. but needless to say, Chad and I were scrambling this afternoon to check out places that we think will be the best fit for her next step in recovery. Although I have loved what the therapists have done for her so far, I’m hoping this ends up being some kind of blessing in disguise. We’ll definitely keep you posted. I have said what I needed to say to the Case Manager and I know her therapists are going to work with her as much as possible before it’s time for her to go.
