Day 34 – Quick Update – Tuesday, May 9

Today’s updated will be brief and sporadic.

I got a call around midnight from the doctor at the hospital letting me know that mom fractured her left hip. I don’t really know the extent since we need to meet with the orthopedic surgeon for an evaluation. The morning doctor that I saw said that it didn’t appear to be dislocated or displaced which is good, but we don’t know what her treatment plan will look like yet.

Her mouth looks better in terms of swelling but she has difficulty speaking and even opening her mouth.

Needless to say, therapies are on hold until further notice.

At this very moment mom is having her EGD done. I will post an update once I get the results.

UPDATE 3:00PM – Good news! The EGD was done and there is NO active bleeding in her belly. The doctor put in a new peg tube and everything looks great there. He did see some inflammation which is likely what is contributing to her not absorbing/digesting her food. He prescribed some meds and said that should take care of it. She resumed her feeds (continual vs. bolus). Her residuals will be monitored to make sure that the medicine is working and she’s actually absorbing her food.

We are still waiting on the ortho consult.

UPDATE 4:00PM – GREAT NEWS! X-ray wasn’t very clear so they ended up taking mom in for a CT of her hip to get a better image. The result? NO FRACTURE!! This is the best possible news. The doctor said that there is no reason to keep her here any longer so hopefully she will be back at HealthSouth before bed time!

She’s going to have to manage her pain for the next several days but I hope it won’t prevent her from getting back to rehab (although with less intensity for the time being). I also hope that we’re still on track for her to head to the new place. I don’t see any reason why anything has to change, but unfortunately I don’t make the decisions. Trying to stay positive!

  1. Our church will keep Sue in our prayers. And I will keep her in my daily prayers for God’s healing power upon her
